MDF and wood cutting files

Wall art, name signs, monograms, layered designs, jali panels and decorative screens, with nesting for 4 by 8 sheets and material costing.

MDF and plywood are the most forgiving sheet materials to cut and the least forgiving to design for: they are thick enough that a hairline detail burns away on the laser or snaps off the router, and they are heavy enough that a 900 mm wall piece needs its structure planned. A jali panel with bars thinner than twice the sheet thickness will bow; a name sign with letters connected by a hairline will arrive in two pieces.

The makers here shape lettering and monograms with wood-friendly minimum features, generate jali and decorative panels with structural bar widths, build layered designs with a backing, and nest everything on standard sheets so the offcut is known before the job is priced.

How a mdf & wood job runs

01

Shape the design

Wooden Name Sign Maker, MDF Calligraphy Maker and Wooden Monogram Generator shape text in any script; MDF Wall Art Maker composes multi-line pieces. Layered Wood Design Maker adds a backing layer at a set offset.

02

Generate panels

Jali Design Maker and Decorative Panel Generator produce lattice and screen panels from a pattern, a panel size, a bar width and a frame width, with the geometry welded into one cuttable sheet.

03

Check features

The makers report the thinnest stroke at the size you set; keep it above 1.5 times the sheet thickness for laser and above the cutter diameter plus 2 mm for CNC.

04

Nest and cost

MDF Sheet Layout and MDF Nesting fit parts on 1220 by 2440 mm or 4 by 8 ft sheets with the gap you set; Wood Material Calculator prices the sheets used.

On the machine

Thickness and use

3 mm MDF for wall lettering and layered art; 6 mm for free-standing signs and jali up to 600 mm; 12 mm for furniture-grade screens and CNC-routed signs. Plywood for anything that gets damp; MDF swells.

Laser versus CNC

Lasers handle 3 to 6 mm cleanly with a brown edge; above 8 mm the char deepens and a CNC router is faster and cleaner. The same DXF serves both, but CNC needs the inside/outside offsets from the CNC group.

Jali bar width

Bars should be at least twice the thickness for a free-standing screen and 1.5 times for a panel glued to a backing. The jali generator warns when the pattern scale makes bars thinner than the rule.

Connected letters

Script names need every letter joined to the next; unjoined letters become separate pieces you have to mount individually. Weld is on by default; check the preview for any gap.

What usually goes wrong

  • Cutting a delicate face at 3 mm strokes in 6 mm MDF. Either go bolder or drop to 3 mm sheet on a backing.
  • Nesting parts across the sheet grain of plywood without care; visible parts should share a direction.
  • A monogram with a floating counter. The letter's inner piece needs a bridge or a backing layer.
  • Layered art with layers the same colour. Contrast between layers, or a 3 mm spacer for shadow, is what makes the depth read.
  • Costing by the part instead of the sheet. The nesting tool reports sheets used and waste; charge for the sheet.

Common questions

What file does the CNC or laser shop need?

DXF at 1:1 in millimetres with the outline on one layer and any engraving on another, which is what these tools export. Include the SVG for shops that use LightBurn or VCarve.

How do I design a jali for a specific window?

Enter the opening size minus the frame allowance in Jali Design Maker, pick the pattern (Islamic star, hexagon, diamond, floral), then set bar and frame width. The generator tiles the pattern to fit and closes the frame.

Can wall art be made in Urdu or Arabic?

Yes. The makers shape the script correctly and weld the strokes; choose a bold Naskh or Kufi face for MDF so the counters and joins survive cutting.

How much does a sheet make?

Nest the real parts. As a guide, 3 mm MDF at 1220 by 2440 mm yields about twelve 300 mm name signs with 5 mm gaps, or four 600 mm jali panels.
